Never one adult alone
Every room has at least two adults. A volunteer is never alone with children.
For ages 0 to 12, with rooms by age group and teaching in Portuguese, at the same time as the Sunday service.
New Hope Kids meets every Sunday at 10:30am, during the service of New Hope, a Brazilian church in Orlando. Children are divided into rooms by age group, from 0 to 12, with teaching in Portuguese, in the Presbyterian tradition that children belong to the church from an early age.
“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”
Mark 10:14 (NIV)
The rooms
Each New Hope Kids room has its age group marked on the door. That is how families find their child’s room.
The teachers stay with the group until the last family arrives.
The space
The New Hope Kids rooms are in a building of their own, with a grassy courtyard in front and a mural painted on the wall. It is a space made to the children’s scale, where they move around with their teachers close by the whole time.
A morning at Kids
The children begin the morning in the sanctuary, with their families, during worship.
After the offering, all the children come forward and the whole church prays for them.
They go with their teachers to the room for their age group, and the teaching is in Portuguese.
Parents pick up their child in the child’s room, following the age group marked on the door.
At New Hope Kids the teaching is in Portuguese, and much of the team speaks both languages. That matters more than it may seem: many of these children were born here, think in English, and learn about God in Portuguese. Having someone who moves between the two keeps their faith from being tied to their parents’ language.
What children learn
New Hope Kids teaching follows a path through the year, not a standalone story each Sunday. Each Sunday picks up from the one before, and the stories are connected to one another until the child sees the thread that runs through the whole Bible: who God is, and what He has done for them in Christ.
The approach changes from room to room. With the youngest, it is a story told with pictures and music. With the older children come questions, discussion, and the chance to disagree out loud, which is how a ten-year-old really learns.
Children almost always leave the room with what they learned in their hands, so they can tell about it. That is on purpose: it keeps the conversation going in the car, at the table, and at bedtime, with the whole family together. Sunday ends, and the story continues at home during the week.
Safety
The New Hope Kids safety rules exist to protect the child and the volunteer as well.
Every room has at least two adults. A volunteer is never alone with children.
The age group is marked on the door of each room, and that is where the family picks up the child at the end of the service. If someone else will pick up your child, let the teacher know.
Every Kids volunteer wears visible identification and goes through a conversation and a screening before serving in a room.
Sunday, 10:30am
On Sunday morning the children sing, hear the Word, and grow alongside other children who are learning the same things. Bring your children and come with them.
“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”
Proverbs 22:6 (NIV)
